ALERTNESS: If you see something....?

Kafka suggests that it may be difficult to be alert to what is really happening. Compare this photo to "Passers- By."  What first cam to your mind in the above photo? How does Kafka describe the man who is not sure about what he sees? What are the ramifications of  indecision?

The ramifications of indecision's can be insignificant in certain situations, but in others it can become fatal. Indecision is hesitating to make a correct call when your decision is vital. In the Passers-by, Kafka describes the man as someone who makes many possible assumptions at an unusual scene that he comes across by. He describes the man as someone who tries to ignore the situation and not get involved because it is simply too late at night and doesn't want to become an accessory at an assault or become the victim of an assault. In this story the man just turns a blind eye, and is glad that they are far from his presence. The two images can relate to the passer-by because when you first the images you don't really know what's going on. Your brain tricks you to believe something that isn't really there, just like in the passers-by story. He saw a situation and thought of many possible circumstances that might not be what's really happening.

These two images can be compared to "Passers-By" because they are based off perspective. They both may seem like something to one person while it may seem completely different to another person. In "Passers-By," these characteristics are portrayed in the fact that the man is hesitant to interact with the two passing men that are running. Due to his perspective, he portrays the men to be possibly dangerous to interact with so, as a result, he does nothing. Although he was alert and cautious due to what seemed as possible danger, in reality, the two men may have been completely harmless. In the first image, I saw the woman first and then the guy with the mustache after. In the second image, I thought that the lines were sloped although in reality they were straight. Kafka describes the man who is not sure about what he sees as a man who, when uncertain about the outcome of an action, he does not commit it. He is described as a cautious man who avoids danger at all costs. The ramification of indecision for this man is relief. He is relieved for the two possibly dangerous men to have been long out of sight. He is thankful for have avoided possible danger due to his alertness.

In each image, I see several abstract objects that make it hard to know exactly what is happening. In the first image I see what appears to be a profile of a woman with a pink head. She also has a green cap with fur on the top and a piece of brown fur on her shoulder which could indicate that she has a fur coat. In the second image though, it has several black and white boxes adjacent to each other forming lines in several rows. This image though is meant to trick ones brain into thinking that the lines are diagonal on top of one another but through if one is alert they can notice that that is not the case. If one is alert, one will notice that the l lines are actually straight lines on top of one another. If one just merely stares at the photo they will not notice the trick. In life, leaders must not just look for superficial meanings in things. They must look into things deeper.
In Passers-By by Franz Kafka, he describes the character in his story as someone who has had his mind distorted by alcohol. This has made him unaware to his environment and in turn anything that would happen around him. He imagines that he sees two people in different scenarios which reveal just how unalert he is. The narrator even says “haven’t you been drinking a lot of wine?” to the main character. If the scenarios that he was imagining were real though, they would have extremely bad consequences. For example, he imagines that he sees someone chasing someone else with a gun and all he is doing is just watching. Instead of being alert, he would just be nonchalant and that could cause the death of somebody. Leaders are always alert because they want to be up to date with everything. Being indifferent could be the difference between success and failure.

In the first image, I saw the back of a person’ head and a mustache located on this said person’s posterior. My eyes utilized the odd placement of facial hair to figure out that there was another face facing the opposite direction of the first.

In the second image, I saw that the lines were horizontally straight even though they appeared to change in width as you drew your finger across them horizontally. It really does look as if the lines are sloped but at a second glance, the borders of the image are perfectly straight. I do not think sloped horizontal lines stacked on top of each other could produce a perfectly straight rectangle.

Franz Kafka indirectly describes the man who is not sure about what he sees as someone who repeatedly tries to utilize uncertainty to justify inaction. He states: “…perhaps they are chasing a third person…” The reparations one must pay for indecision are infinite and being passive when it comes to a dilemma results in more doubt because one begins to wonder what may have happened as a result of one’s lack of taking any decisive action.

  5. In the first picture it looks like a man with two faces and the second picture gives an illusion and its not easy to perceive whether the horizontal lines are sloping or are straight. The pictures relate to "Passers-BY" because in a way one must simply use their own perspective to understand the picture or what exactly is going on in Passers-By. The ramifications of indecision are a waste of time, it will cause headaches, and is confusing. The pictures and Passers By relate because with both the images and the excerpt, it is one's imagination that MAKES these stories and images what they are.

  6. The first picture looks like two faces one looking at you and the other looking somewhere else. The second picture with the line plays with the brain very much. Making the picture seem a little complicated. The picture does in away confuse me because the pictures looks slanted no straight as it says.

  8. In the first image i saw a man with a mustache, but at the same time i saw the face of a woman turned to the side. In the second image, I saw checker patterned tiles. As you turn your head however those tiles seem skewed and distorted but never did they seem like straight lines. We can apply this to the touchstone because its all about perspective. Just because I view something one way, another might see something I didn't

  9. These two works of art can be related to the Passer because at first glance you see you see a man with a mustache in the first picture, and in the second one you see just black and white rectangles in a pattern. But if you look closer to the first one you can actually see a woman, and in the second picture you can see that theses patterns are making lines. Just like in the touchstone the two people could have been running together or one is running from the other. being alert can help you figure out what is truly happening.

In these two images, Kafka's recognition of perspective playing a huge part in society is evident. In the first image I see a woman with semi long hair, who is wearing a type of hat on her head and what seems to be a fur scarf on her neck. In the second image, I see a rectangular box with black and white blocks that are not in line with one another. Although the lines look slanted I believe they are straight because I squinted my eyes close enough to realize that the trick to the box was the misalignment of the blocks. These two images relate to "passers-by" because in these images ones perception determines everything. I could see something one way but another person viewing the same picture might view it differently. Kafka describes a man who is not sure about what he sees as indecisive. This man would make up many scenarios of things that could be or could not be happening and will fail to make the decision to act if the situation calls for it. The ramifications of indecision are almost always negative. It is better to act on a situation rather than letting the situation go by and regretting it later on.

  11. The first thing I see in these Images is a lady and black and white lines. Upon further looking however I saw two different faces and the lines seem as they are moving. When you are only looking at something at only the surface level you are not truly comprehending what you claim to see. This also has something to do with indeciveness because if you don’t see everything the true way it is then you won’t be sure to chose the correct thing.

To be alert means to be observing constantly, you also need to be willing to learn and improve. In the picture above there is a man with a gun running away from a mob. If the man in Passers-By was in this situation would he let them pass by or would he intercept and do something about it? A lot of factors would go into making this decision, in Passers-By Kafka tries to make excuses to why let them go by. He says he's tired, he's been drinking, the people are going uphill, and it is night.

Alertness means observing constantly. Stay open minded. Be eager to learn and improve. Franz Kafka describes the man as being open minded and thinking outside the box. The man is able to see all possible things that could be going on by seeing the two men running. The man didn't want to make a mistake, the man doesn't want to become an "accessory" to either one of the man. “When you go walking at night up" anything could be happening. In this picture I see the first man holding a gun and I guess he stole something from the man behind him so he running away.

In the picture above i see a man currently running away from what it looks like to be zombies. He holds a gun in his hand while running. Kafka describes the man as looking at the situation from different angles and how the man is not sure which situation is happening. The ramifications of indecision is that he does not know what to do about it.

  20. When i first was able to observe this picture i figured that there was a zombie apocalypse occurring on earth. It seems as if the man in the picture is now trying to flee from the zombies after having tried to shoot at the zombies and emptying his magazine or clip. Franz Kafka describes the man in his story as being indecisive or hesitant on what to do when he sees the feeble old man running being chased by another man. The man is thinking of all possible scenarios and is deciding to just go home and mind his own business. Sometimes when you are indecisive bad things can occur like in situations like the one Franz Kafka described in his story.

In the picture it looks like there is a man in the front of what seems to be a group of people behind him. The man is holding what seems to be a gun in his right hand. This is what kafka is talking about, that it is hard to be alert and difficult to see what is actually happeneing. In the text it there were two men running up a hill and we were given 7 situations of what coud be happening.

when I first saw the picture, I automatically thought of Mr. Kafka. kafka described the man as a feeble old man. this picture depicts document 16 very well, the man is running away while he is being chased. just like in the document, you don't know if you want to help the people chasing him, help him run away, or just choose to not do anything.

The picture above relates to the document "Passers-By" by Franz Kafka because in Kafka's document the reader is put in a situation in which an elder man runs past you and another man is chasing him. In the picture above a man is running away from what seems to be zombies. If you are put into both scenarios then it could go more than one way, some people react right away and would help out the person being chased or you would stay away from anything that could bring trouble to you and drag you into something that can be life threatening. The whole point of being alert is to know your surroundings, if someone suspicious starts following you and if you have your headphones you probably wont notice.

What first came to my mind was a man following other men running away from what may be a crime they committed. Just as Kafka's passage, a picture can tell a million stories. There can be many assumptions made off the picture, its not 100% sure. The ramifications are you can't really tell what these men are running away from. All you can really tell is that the 1st man is armed.
