Select the key sentence or phrase from Francis Bacon's "
About Revenge." Write five sentences that develop and elaborate on this sentence or phrase. You may not use the word "I." His words from the sixteenth century still ring true today. His paideic words might be even better than what we are saying in the twenty-first century! Is Bacon's view on self-control realistic? Is he pragmatic? Is he an idealist? How valuable are his words for the Hayesman of 2015? Are you a "Beefer" or a Bacon Lover?"

"ABOUT REVENGE"
"Whatever is past is gone and can't be changed. Wise people know they have enough to do in the present and with whatever might happen in the future." He basically is saying that we should not worry about something in the past and just focus on the future or present. Bacon's views on self control are not realistic because in todays time, people have less self control as a whole. But his words is not only Very valuable for Hayesmen but for all people in the world.
Jason, What prompts you to say today's times are ones of less self-control? d/e 80

ReplyDelete“ What is certain about planning to get even is that one’s own wounds remain open. If one didn't spend one’s time trying to take revenge, those injuries would heal and be forgotten”. While someone is trying to avenge a person whom shared a very special relationship with, this person is slowly decaying and is slowly dying from suffering because he isn't allowing his body, soul and mind to rest and grow. His mind is stuck in a specific time period and isn't letting the person who died move on and rest in peace, therefore inflicting more pain and reopening wounds. In some cases Francis Bacon’s views on self-control is realistic and in others it is IMPOSSIBLE to follow, because sometimes the traumatic fashion in which your loved one was abused, killed, and tortured was so traumatizing that it can not be erased, it lives with you and stays with you forever. He is an idealist because this is what HE believes about Self control and revenge, and his beliefs might not be shared by others. His words are very valuable for a Hayesman because self control is needed in an environment like Hayes, where is very easy to get expelled if one can not control their emotions.
Jhasua, Bacon's views are, not is. where it is ,, cannot.. these are minor typos. Your overall answer is excellent. 95

ReplyDelete"Whatever is past is gone and cannot be changed". This line is the most important line in Francis Bacon's "about revenge". Many people today do not see that there are things in this world that cannot be changed no matter what they do. People try to hurt others who hurts them because they feel that by doing so, the pain that they feel will disappear. The opposite actually occurs. Instead of feeling at ease, they begin to close their minds and hearts to other people, making the anger and the guilt they feel to become even stronger. Bacon's view on self control is very realistic because he stated that worrying about revenge is "just a waste of time". It can result in an endless cycle of pain and anger. Francis Bacon is very pragmatic and not idealistic because he knows that there would be no satisfaction gained from hurting someone else and leaves justice to the law. He does not act based on emotions but instead surveys the situation to see the best solution. Francis Bacon's words are very valuable to a Hayesman because in today's world people tend to act irrationally due to their emotions. To a Hayesman who has a bright future ahead of him, listening to Francis Bacon's words would be best because revenge can ruin a man life.
Yakubu, typos: "About Revenge".. ruin a man's life. these are typos.

this is a quote from Bacon's On Revenge, "Therefore why should I be angry with a man, for loving himself better than me? And if any man should do wrong, merely out of ill-nature, why, yet it is but like the thorn or briar, which prick and scratch, because they can do no other." In other words, people only hurt others if they will gain something from it, so why should we get angry at the person for them liking themselves better than us. Also if the person does us wrong for no reason why get mad at them, pain and wrong doing may be the only thing that they know. this quote brings about a new perspective to a way on thinking about how we should deal with the people will hurt you.

ReplyDeleteRevenge is something that should be avoided. Francis Bacon best illustrated this when he said: “In taking revenge, a person does indeed get even with his enemy. But when one refuses to take revenge, he shows that he is better than his enemy.” In other words, if someone’s adversary commits a reprehensible act and the person who has been negatively affected by said act also commits a punishable deed, then nothing differentiates the original offender from the person who sees their actions as justifiable, due to the first offender contributing to malevolence in his or her life. Will temporary satisfaction be found through the taking of revenge? Yes, but one will be plagued by the conscience after this satisfaction fades away, similarly to the way Brutus was plagued after assassinating his own father, Julius Caesar. For some, Bacon’s view on self-control is realistic; others lack self-control or see refraining from certain acts as cowardly. Bacon is pragmatic in his view on self-control and he is not idealistic because he acknowledges that not everybody agrees with avoiding vengeful acts. His acknowledgement arose when he stated that people who worry about past injuries simply waste their time. For the Hayesmen of 2014 and the generations to come, these words are essential.
James, Excellent

ReplyDeleteThe key sentences from Francis Bacon's "About Revenge" is "Suppose someone hurts me because he is evil. Isn't that just like a thorn or briar which scratches me because it can't do anything else?" Francis Bacon makes the point that someone who hurts you is basically incapable of anything else but hurting you. That they are lost within themselves and thus cannot do anything but hurt others. They are stuck in that mode of evil and let out their frustration out on others. They are like thorns to someone's sides who cause pain in others. Francis Bacon portrays that whoever hurts another it is because they can't do anything else but that. As a result from this, revenge is futile and thus senseless and useless. Bacon's view on self-control is not realistic or pragmatic because his words are more idealistic. His views are but a dream of nice-sounding events that are the opposite of what people usually think about revenge. People normally view revenge as necessary in order to avenge the one who they lost because of the killer's malice. His words are, though idealistic, very valuable words for the Hayesmen of 2014 because they set a standard and goal that Hayesmen should follow and abide by and thus change the views of the world when we become leaders who turn this idealistic dream into a pragmatic reality.
Joyner, (That) They are lost... let out their frustration ( out) on others .. does so ( it is) Good choice of a quote. Good close, but the dream becomes a reality. Does it create a Pragmatic reality? 95
DeleteA key sentence Francis Bacon's says is "Revenge is a kind of wild justice; which the more man's nature runs to, the more ought law to weed it out". He is saying revenge is in a way justice but not really the right way kind of crazy. In revenge you are basically taking matters in to your own hands. This sometimes is necessary for some people when authorities don't do there job or feel like there not doing there job. I feel his view on self control is realistic but its easy to say things like revenge isn't good that it just starts a cycle, that its better to let it go until your in the situation yourself. Francis words are valuable to a Hayesman because lots of us get in situations that might cause us to want to seek revenge. Sometimes we have to look at the bigger picture of the consequences that can happen because of revenge and how bad they can be. Its easy to say that now though when you aren't in the act. No one knows what they are going to do when the time comes.

"Revenge is a kind of wild justice; which the more man's nature runs to, the more ought law to weed it out." (Francis Bacon) People believe that revenge is the best solution to certain circumstances but that is not the case at all. Revenge actually worsens a situation in the long run. Rather than people turning to revenge, because it is "more of man's nature", people should "ought law to weed it out". I think Bacon's view on self control is realistic because we could apply it to many situations and scenarios today. He is pragmatic and idealistic and his words would be very valuable for a the the Hayesman of 2014. His views and perspective on life should be one that a Hayesman should follow.

ReplyDeleteBacon quoted "Whatever is past is gone and can't be changed. Wise people know they have enough to do in the present and with whatever might happen in the future." Bacon expresses that what ever might have happend before has already been done and cannot be changed with or without taking revenge. Smart people should know that the best thing is to just live on with life because revenge might just makes things worst in the end and you may never know what good might happen in the future for your self and maybe a negative to the vengeful person whom did what they have done.
Carlos ," whatever" make things worse. In the end.. last sentence runs on.

"Whatever is past is gone and cannot be changed" This is the main of idea in About Revenge by Francis Bacon. He is saying that past evils done to one will not change through revenge and in fact will only make matters worse. He says that one should not take revenge even when a evil is done because that "destroys law itself. It is plausible to say though that Bacon's view on revenge is more idealistic. He does not take into account that sudden humans emotions like rage overrides reason. His words might be valuable to one thinks of the world ideally but not to one who sees the world as it is.

ReplyDeleteThe key phrase is "Whatever is past is gone and cannot be changed". People today never put the past behind them. No one realizes that one cannot change the past. If you live in the past you will never see the future. Bacon is not pragmatic but he is an idealist. If one thinks that revenge is controlable thing they are wrong. No one in the moment can control themselfs and they might just take revenge.
Tyron. Good work. A bit overstated. Might we replace Never with rarely? No one with few? typos; controllable, ...cannot be changed."

Good, but surely some say "let the past stay in the past." Can some control the urge to get revenge? Your work is good, on target, real, but maybe a bit overstated. Well done 95 Typos: controllable,
Francis Bacon once said "Whatever is past is gone and cannot be changed." This means that whatever events took place within the past shall be forgotten and that in this instance, revenge shall not be inquired. Bacon's perspective on self-control is a realistic, and idealistic one. Bacons perspective on revenge is idealistic because in modern society people lack self-control on not to counteract with violence, but it is also realistic from a moral standpoint. One should ask themselves what is right or wrong before ultimately holding a grudge, and seek revenge.
ReplyDeleteJordan, VERY LATE, nevertheless, your last sentence packs a lot of paideia if you really look at it ! 75

This is basically saying that revenge is a harsh way for punishing someone for committing a wrong to you like people will try to kill you, torture you, etc.... We should just forgive one another. Yes. No. No. They are very valuable. Im a bacon lover

ReplyDelete"When one refuses to take revenge he shows that he is better than his enemy." Revenge is when someone tries to get back or tries to do the same thing that was done to him, which was obviously a wrong doing. In other words Bacon is saying when the person refuses to take revenge he is better, mature, and has self-control. To have self control one must have self-discipline, keep emotions under control, good judgment, and common sense. His words are very valuable to a Hayesman because it will help him with his studies and later on in life. A Hayesman must be a Bacon to stay out of trouble.

ReplyDeleteFrancis bacon said, "People who spend their time worrying about past injuries just waste their time." Revenge is just a waste of time. People should move on, it might take some time but it shouldn't be forever. Hurting others just to get an eye for an eye will just hurt you and the people around you. Everybody need some of Bacon and "beef" because you shouldn't let people to hurt you or your family. This quote is valuable to the Hayesman of 2015 because this advice will help us become leaders.

ReplyDeleteWhatever is past is gone and can't be changed. Bacon is implying that you can not change what happened before but could only look towards the future. We should have more self control and hold back. This lesson is valuable to a Hayesman because it will help us to become leaders and have self control.

ReplyDeleteFrancis bacon once said "people who spend their time worrying about past injuries just waste their time." What Francis means by this is that you cant spend your life thinking about people who have hurt you in the past, you must learn to forgive and forget. When you don't let go of those past problems it tends obstruct you your mental ability and tend to lead the person into making regretful choices in the future.
Francis view on revenge is realistic and show that he's pragmatic through the examples he give from people in past history believe that i'm a Bacon lover
