Confidence and Poise

Mencius  and Joseph got our attention in theses last few days of the  school year.  Comment on Mencius' confidence as demonstrated in the Touchstone, " The Seven Books."  This  trait is  closely linked to  the poise ( calmness and ease) that Joseph  demonstrated in  Matthew 1:18- 2: 23.

1. What is the significance of Mencius' traveling "over a thousand miles" to Leang?
2.  How does Mencius view "profit?"
3. Why are "misery" and "suffering" so important?
4. What is the principle of "benevolence?"
5  What is the principle of "righteousness?"
6.  Fully describe what Mencius means when he speaks of "turning inward."
7. Why is Section IV so very important?
8. Lastly, do you believe King Hwuy was impressed or disappointed by Mencius' comments to his question?

    1. It shows how much dedication Mencius has to teach, and how important his advice is.

    2. Mencius sees profit as not important and believes that righteousness comes first.

    3. Misery and suffering shows us that we are human and have feelings.

    4. Benevolence is to do good, an act of kindness. The feeling of someone else’s misery is also benevolence.

    5. Righteousness is the feeling of shame and anger towards yourself.

    6. When Mencius speaks about turning inward he tells us to examine our souls, to examine what we are doing wrong. Also what can we do to change ourselves to become a better leader.

    7. Mencius says when we’ve done everything in our power to change and the other person doesn’t acknowledge, you just need to stop dealing with them. He refers to them as animals.

    8. King Hwuy was impressed because he let him speak his mind therefore expressing his thought upon how he felt. King Hwuy didn’t interrupt him and let him speak thoroughly on righteousness vs. Profit.

Mencius traveling a thousand miles signifies that the message was very important. Mencius views profit as not important, that righteousness is more important. Misery and suffering is more important because it teaches how to be grateful. The principle of benevolence is caring for others without expecting any profit. The feeling for another’s misery is the principle of benevolence. The principle of righteousness is the feeling of shame and anger. What Mencius means when he speaks of “turning inward” is to step back and analyze the situation and instead of blaming the other person you ask yourself, what I can do to help you make this better. Section IV is important because Mencius says “What distinguishes a superior man from others is what he holds in his heart; namely, benevolence and propriety”. A man of propriety shows respect and always chooses to do good things for the help of others. We believe that King Hwuy was impressed by Mencius because instead of dismissing Mencius he let him talk and finish what he had to say.
