We had a good discussion in class on Hector and Andromache. Homer would be proud! Simply select a key sentence or phrase from the text and briefly comment on its connection to loyalty. Do not use the first person singular.
“… how could I face my men and their wives if I stayed away from battle?” is the most important quote of the text.
Hector is loyal to his country and his men because he’s standing by them through the agony of war. It’s bad because he is leaving his wife and child while he goes to battle, but on the other hand it is a good thing because he shows the need of the many outweighs the needs of the few. He is noble because he is making a name for himself and protecting his country.
Just as Cornel West said, “We have to realize that there cannot be relationships unless there is commitment unless there is loyalty, unless there is love, patience, persistence.” Hector realizes that without the relationship of his fellow men, he cannot be a true Trojan. Hector also showed love for his wife and son because if he didn’t go to battle, he would feel he is letting them down.

Hector is more inclined to go to war with his men rather than to stay at home with his wife, he wants to continue his legacy and be remembered as the man who wouldn’t go down without a fight.
