ReplyDeleteJohn Henry would be a great example to Hayes men seeking a sense of industriousness because he is a role model that shows to never give up. John Henry said to his captain “A man is nothing but a man, but before I let your steam drill beat me down, I’d die with a hammer in my hand, Lord, Lord, I’d die with a hammer in my hand” This is an excellent quote because it shows his dedicated effort to what he loved doing and never giving up even though he was faced with a great challenge. This touchstone talks about both heroes and victims because in a way it encourages victims to reach their full potential and do something in the world to become a hero. John R. Wooden’s definition of industriousness is “There is no substitution for work. Worthwhile result comes from hard work and careful planning.” In other words everything that you do must be worth your time. Brother William Sherlog once stated “Leadership is the process of inspiring others to follow in a particular path so together we can make a difference.”

John Henry is the symbol of hard work and Industriousness. According to John Wooden industriousness means there is no substitution for work, this relates to the poem of John Henry because he has plans of defeating machinery, a Hayesmen has plans for graduating High school. Both consist of hard work in which careful planning is needed. John Henry can serve as an inspiration to Hayesmen in the light of showing how hard work doesn’t come at an easy cost. Unfortunately his drive towards beating the steam drill resulted in his death.
“John Henry beat the steam drill down. But he hammered his poor heart to death, lord, lord; He hammered his poor heart to death.” This quote clearly exemplifies how with hard work comes with a price, sometimes people put all their heart into their jobs and forget about the people around them. We believe that during that time period John Henry was an icon because he took on the challenge of which no man thought was possible. This touchstone is an example of both a hero and a victim because he was a victim of his conscious and died the way a hero would have standing for something he believed in.
