1.Give three comments on the "man in the club" who is described in William James' "Will to Believe."
2. Are you like the "man in the club?" Explain your answer.
3. What is the most powerful line or phrase in this Touchstone?
The "man in the club" who is described in William James' "Will to Believe" is a man who keeps to himself. This man does not approach anyone so he is not doing anything positive or negative. On the other hand, when someone approaches this "man in the club," he attacks them on their ideas and opinions which produces a negative affect. This "man in the club" lacks initiative. He lacks in taking the first step into society and also in attempting to listen onto the ideas of others. It could be said that this man hears what other tell him, but he does not listen. He lacks the ability to grasp what is being said to him so the information just goes into one idea and comes out the other. I am not like the "man in the club" because I do take the initiative. I do approach others first and listen to what they may think about a certain topic. Then afterwards I share my opinion on their idea by saying whether I agree or not and then I explain why in a calm and understanding manner. A song that deals with initiative is "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus. Lyrics in the song that deal with initiative are, "There's always gonna be another mountain, you're always gonna wanna make it move." and "It doesn't matter how fast you get there, it doesn't matter what's waiting on the other side, it's the climb." Joyner L. Meregildo

The "man in the club" is someone who should be more trusting, he is somewhat of a skeptic, he is someone who needs concrete evidence before he belives in anything. I am similar to the man in the club because I am not trusting and I do not believe it is a good thing to follow something blindly. A song that deals with intiative is Gratitude with Attitude by Jim Rule.
Gratitude is an attitude To show that you know what you’ve got. I know that Gratitude is an attitude It starts when you say, “Thanks a lot!” Hey! Thanks for our voices so we can sing.
To accept without questioning is wrong. One must not have a predetermined idea and then try to justify it with evidence rather than learning with a neutral and open mind and seeing proofs for often times conflicting ideas. If one’s religious belief is based on personal experiences that manifest the existence of a deity or many, then fine but these are personal evidences that others will most likely not experience. One must be aware that truth for one person is not truth for every person. I am like the man in the club in the sense that I demand evidence for every claim but I do not go out looking for claims that may or may not have a substantial amount of evidence behind them. I like to partake in discourse, and let someone introduce a claim, try to understand it well, and politely ask for proof backing it. If it is reasonable then I tell the person. If what they say is easily refuted then I refute it. Religion is not inherently wrong but one must be humble enough to accept uncertainty.
A song that illustrates initiative is Rage Against the Machine’s song: “Wake up.” A specific lyric is: “…several federal men…pulled schemes on the dream and put it to an end…” Though many have commended Martin Luther King Jr., not many have looked at federal documents which illustrated that the federal government saw King and Malcolm X as threats to peace that needed to be neutralized. It took initiative to go out looking for such information. Here is the link to this song. It contains vulgarity so I suggest not displaying it the class. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkp7tkeu22I)

I believe that the comic is referring to the fact that we wait for people to tell us what to do in order for us to even begin to do anything.
